This week our focus is on our lungs, how we breathe, and the wonders of air. We'll be doing tons of fun art, music, math, and science projects centered around our theme. If you like straws and bubbles you are going to love what I have planned for the kiddos this week :) Join us and let us know what you are up to this week as well!
Books we are using this week:
Our "textbook" is primarily the First Encyclopedia of the Human Body. This offers two pages describing breathing in very simple terms. This book has internet links where you can go to visit a "lungs lab", find out about asthma and yawning, watch videos, play games, and do experiments (of course).
We'll probably dive deeper into the respiratory system using my favorite book, Science Encyclopedia. The language is more advanced, but I think it's great to expose even very young children to technical terms and ideas. I always learn a lot, too, when we read this book together! This one also contains tons of internet links that we will peruse if we have time.
See Inside Your Body is a lift-the-flap book that is a must-have for kids. When talking about body systems it can be really difficult to explain what is going on inside when you can't actually see it. Having an illustrated book like this where your kids can lift flaps to see the layers of ribs and muscles, zoom in to see deep within your lungs, and "open up" your wind pipe to see what's inside really increases their comprehension. This book also has internet links, which you all know I'm crazy about :)
Update: Here are the links to all of the activities we did this week!
